A holiday initiative for the open source hardware community
GetSmandered is the group certification program from Smander. It is designed to help small hardware developers and open source teams navigate European product compliance without the usual cost and complexity. Round 0 is our end-of-year benefit to the open source ecosystem. We are offering access to the program at a significantly reduced price to support the community that has supported us.
Scope of Round 0
Round 0 is intentionally limited in focus. Only products meeting all of the following criteria can participate:
- Electronics products without moving parts
- Not medical equipment
- Not safety-critical equipment
- Not defense-related equipment
- Fully open source, including all software, hardware, and design files
- All included technologies must be used in accordance with their respective licenses
- Final acceptance is subject to internal evaluation by Smander
This scope allows us to begin with a well-defined category that benefits many independent makers while ensuring we can deliver high-quality certification support.
Whats included in GetSmandered?
- Product Assessment (similar to Simple Start)
- Risk Analysis Template (according to GPSR, to fill out yourself)
- optional Upgrade: We can do the Risk Analysis for you.
- TO-DO Sheet (concise information about the steps you need to take next)
- included: 1 hour Consultation Session to explain each Task in Detail.
- included: review of your submitted files for completeness
- optional upgrade: additional Consultation Sessions on demand
- Preparation of your Documents once all Tasks are completed.
- Declaration of Conformity
- Safety Notice
- Technical Documentation File
- optional upgrade: Printed and bound Copy of your products CE Documentation
(the recomended hardcopy to keep on record for the required period, but als just cool to proudly display on a shelf)
- optional upgrade: Printed and bound Copy of your products CE Documentation
- optional Upgrade: EU-REP Service

Our goal is to remove uncertainty and provide an accessible path to legally releasing hardware products in the European market.
Cost and availability
Round 0 is not free. Certification work requires specialist staff, documentation development, and coordinated review. However, this round is priced far below our standard commercial program to make it possible for open source developers to participate without a major financial burden.
Because costs are shared across all participating projects, the actual fee per participant will decrease as more projects join. The more makers participate, the more we can lower the price while still delivering the full service. You are free to withdraw at any time before final certification, but initial enrollment must be completed by the cut-off date of 31 January 2026. Applications are already open.
Space in Round 0 is limited, and projects are accepted based on suitability and community value.
Why we are doing this
Bringing hardware to market often becomes inaccessible once regulatory requirements enter the picture. We believe open source creators deserve the same ability to launch and distribute their work as larger companies with dedicated compliance teams. By organizing certification support as a group effort, the cost and workload are reduced for everyone involved. Round 0 is the first step in building this model at scale.
How to apply
- Confirm that your product fits the scope listed above
- Submit an application describing the project and its open source licensing
- If selected, provide further product details and a sample when requested
- Collaborate with Smander through the assessment and documentation process
- Complete any required actions and receive your final compliance documentation package
We encourage applicants to be ready with clear licensing, public repositories or design documentation, and a ready-or-near-ready prototype.
Invitation to the community
If you have developed an open source electronics product and want to take the final step toward legal distribution in Europe, Round 0 is an opportunity created for you. We invite ambitious makers and teams to participate, strengthen the open hardware ecosystem, and help shape a future where compliance is no longer a barrier to innovation.
